WWS Updates - June 12, 2020
Here are some updates for this week. Have a great weekend!
I would like to share that I am grateful for the many emails, conversations, and meetings that I have had since my message was shared with our families about equity. The concerns, the stories, and the insight has stirred a great deal of emotion for those who are sharing and for me as I listen and learn. It has been raw, and painful, and yes-necessary.
We acknowledge we have room to grow as a school district, and we are committed to the work it will take to ensure equitable treatment of all students. This work must be intentional, collaborative, and research-based. We need to continually examine our policies, practices, and procedures to ensure we are honoring the identities of all students regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.
We are in the process of designing a variety of activities to provide all district staff with opportunities to listen, learn, and engage in dialogue to address racism and discrimination. We are taking action steps this summer to provide implicit bias training for all staff, book studies (at the school and district levels), and partnering with our community to grow our common understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion. We are also working with Dr. Renae Azziz to create our road map for the 2020-21 school year. As we continue our equity journey, please continue to reach out with ideas! There are many possibilities ahead of us as we continue to ensure ALL students have access to safe and nurturing learning environments.
