The jazz program at WHS features many components, some of them inside of class and some of them outside of the school day. Current offerings include a jazz band class during second trimester, and an after-school ensemble that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5. Both of these groups work on jazz skills such as improvisation and style, through studying a variety of repertoire.
Jazz Band is an exploration opportunity for band members. Instruments in the traditional jazz band include trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, bass, guitar, drum set, and additional percussion. Students on non-traditional jazz instruments can also participate. Students can switch to a jazz instrument or we can modify an existing part to accommodate the student. Participating in the jazz band provides students with an opportunity to refine their technical skills, broaden their knowledge of musical styles, and practice the art of improvisation.
