WWS Updates August 7, 2020
Rocks - Happy Friday!
We are looking forward to welcoming back all of our students next week - virtually or in person. To prepare you, we have compiled a comprehensive, one-stop-shop document that provides as many plans and details as we have at this time. While we don’t want to overwhelm you, we do want to try and address as many questions as possible. Click here to view the document on our website. Thank you to the amazing team of district and building leaders who have worked tirelessly to pull together this plan, which puts the health and safety of our students and staff at the forefront!
To help welcome you back, Parent University has created an amazing virtual event - WWS Parent University Back to School Virtual Experience - and it’s located on the Parent University website. Click here to view the PU virtual experience. You won't want to miss these informative videos featuring a welcome back message from WWS leaders, supportive tips and ideas from our WWS counseling team, ways to connect to WWS resources, engagement opportunities, community resources and much more! Be sure to check it out! It’s live now!
Starting next week, we will resume our normal monthly newsletters and communicate updates as needed. Other important updates are below. See you next week!
Gold - Green next week ONLY. Reminder: School begins on Thursday, August 13. On this date, the Gold Team (A-K) will go in-person on Thursday, August 13, while the Green Team (L-Z) will do virtual learning that day. On Friday, August 14, the Green Team will go in-person and the Gold team will be virtual. Here is the schedule after the first week of school.
*The week of Labor Day the Gold/Green schedule is also modified. See calendar.
PowerSchool - The current plan is for PowerSchool to open this Saturday, August 8, 9 am. PowerSchool is the software program WWS uses to track attendance and grading. Once open, you will be able to see class schedules and teacher assignments.
Transportation - Bus routes will be available on our website under Departments > Transportation starting August 10th.
Childcare Update - We realize that many families are struggling to find childcare and we want to help! Our all-day BAC/Zone 58 programs filled up quickly but we are exploring alternative options. We are working with local churches and the YMCA to explore alternative childcare options for WWS families. If you would like to be added to the BAC/Zone 58 waiting list, please email [email protected].
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - Each building and department is in the process of establishing an equity team. We will also be forming an equity team through Parent University. A member from each of these teams will serve on the WWS district equity team. We will also round out our district equity team with representation from our community. Members for the district equity team will be identified by the end of August.
Technology Updates - Parents may have received communications from the schools regarding technology (computer/devices), including how to request devices, specifications for bring-your-own, and password information. If you have not received such a message, you can check out the details by various grade levels here.

WWS Updates - July 31, 2020
Hello Rocks Families!
Thank you to all our families for your patience and support as we work through details of our Return of the Rocks reopening plan. Thank you to everyone who completed the survey! We have gathered the data and we are working through refining the final details for our return to school plan. We are ready to welcome back our students in August. Please see below for our weekly updates!
First Week of School - Thursday and Friday - August 13 & 14
Students who will attend in-person on Thursday (Gold) will be issued a “Getting to Know You” assignment to be completed Friday for virtual learning. The students going to school Friday will get the “Getting to Know You” assignment to be completed Thursday. Your teacher will be in touch with details.
BAC/Zone 58 Update
The WWS BAC and Zone 58 hybrid all day care has met its current capacity. We will establish a waiting list for families who remain interested in care as we continue to work on ways to increase our capacity and maintain social distancing. We will communicate more information to interested families as decisions are made about additional capacity as we prepare to return to school.
Mask Policy
We have had several questions regarding masks since the Governor’s announcement last week. Our mask policy will not change and aligns with the Governor’s requirements. It still is requiring the following: In all WWS classrooms, students will be required to wear facemasks. The only time a student will be allowed to remove a facemask is if the teacher gives the students the option to remove it based on the fact that the teacher has determined that the students are socially distanced. We know that it will be very difficult to socially distance within our classrooms, so students will be wearing masks the majority of the time. However, if a teacher is able to find ways for students to socially distance in a classroom (6 feet away from anyone else) or they are able utilize another space in the building (large area) or go outside for instruction where students could spread out and socially distance, then the teacher, if they want, could give the students the option to remove their masks. That is the discretion that the teacher has in terms of wearing masks - only if social distancing is present and the teacher gives the approval. Students will also be required to wear masks on buses.
New lanyards for Students in Grades K-6
WWS will be purchasing green lanyards for students in grades K-6 who will be attending school on the gold and green days so when needed, they can clip their masks to the lanyard for safe keeping! These lanyards will be distributed the first week of school.
School Supplies
You can find a link to all school supply lists for elementaries, WIS and WMS on our website www.wws.k12.in.us - listed under each school. If you have questions about supplies, please contact your child’s school directly.
Help Wanted: BAC
BAC is in need of staff to help support families during the district's hybrid plan. If you have a college aged student who either took a year off or is now at home due to online classes, we'd love to interview him/her for a position in BAC. Salaries are competitive and the employee can work up to 8 hours a day. We are also looking for high school seniors who have co-op or senior seminar at the end of the day to help in BAC. WWS Updates - July 23, 2020
Rocks Families,
The only certainty these days seems to be uncertainty. We know that reaching district-wide consensus on the best path to return to school may be unachievable, but Westfield Washington Schools’ commitment is to provide the best educational experience possible for our students while adhering to the guidelines set forth by state and local health departments.
WWS has revised the Return of the Rocks Plan and will be reopening all nine schools (K-12) under a hybrid plan, which will allow students to alternate in-person attendance throughout the school week. By splitting students into two groups, we are reducing the number of students in buildings and on buses, which allows for greater opportunity to social distance and meet health and safety guidelines. This hybrid plan will be in place until we are able to transition back to a regular school schedule or unless circumstances would cause us to change direction. We will be evaluating this plan on a monthly basis and will communicate any changes two weeks in advance unless we are forced to close immediately. Our first evaluation will be September 1. Our priority is to maximize face-to-face instruction for as long as possible. PLEASE NOTE: Families may still opt into the 100 percent virtual learning option at the beginning of the school year. Please review additional details, including considerations for WHS athletes, here. (link will be active again soon)
Students with last names beginning with the letters A through K will be on the Gold Team. Students with last names beginning with letters L through Z will be on the Green Team. The Gold Team will attend in-person on Monday and Wednesday, and Team Green will attend in-person on Tuesday and Thursday. Fridays will be virtual learning for all students. At home days (not in-person) will be virtual learning for students. There will be no delayed start Wednesday.
Each school will communicate with families regarding education plans for students receiving special services. Each school will also be communicating to its families with their building plans/specific details relating to our hybrid plan as well as the 100 percent virtual learning plan no later than Friday.
Governor Holcomb mandated in an announcement yesterday that masks will be required for all staff and teachers as well as students in 3rd grade and up. However, our mask policy, which was shared in a previous communication, will remain the same. Our hybrid plan provides an opportunity for smaller groups of students and more opportunities for social distancing in classrooms. To review the masks requirements, please click here for the Return of the Rocks FAQ.
We realize there may be some exceptions to Team placement; for example, some families have students with different last names and/or different residences. In those circumstances, consideration will be given to adjust Team placement. If your family would like to request a Team adjustment, please respond accordingly in the survey below.
Please see the revised school calendar for information on which days students will be attending in-person and which days will be virtual learning days. CALENDAR Please note - the first week of school (Thursday, August 13 and Friday, August 14) the Gold Team will attend in-person on Thursday and the Green Team will attend in-person on Friday. Additionally, the week of Labor Day, the Green Team will attend in-person Tuesday and Thursday, and the Gold Team will attend in-person Wednesday and Friday.
Additionally, we understand that childcare is critical for many of our Rocks families. TOTS preschool and the All Aboard program (for Pre-K students) will open beginning on the scheduled date of August 12th and will not be doing an alternate day schedule. The WWS staff is working on developing additional childcare opportunities for our working families to help meet this need while the district is on the hybrid plan. We are also looking at ways to assist families needing childcare and who might be experiencing financial hardships. Please complete the below survey to help us evaluate the childcare needs of our families. To learn more about these childcare programs, please email [email protected]
As we have stated in previous communications, cleaning of our buildings and buses is a top priority. Necessary handwashing supplies such as soap and paper towels will be stocked and there will be access to hand sanitizer in common areas or locations where soap and water is not readily available.
In addition to the routine cleaning, we will be cleaning and disinfecting the schools throughout the day, including frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, handrails, tables and bathrooms, with EPA-approved disinfectant for COVID-19. Disinfectants will be available to staff to use in classrooms as needed during the school day. Buses will be cleaned and disinfected after AM and PM routes.
Parent Survey - IMPORTANT
Please complete this survey by Monday, July 27th to indicate the following:
- If your family will be opting into the 100 percent virtual option
- If you would like WWS to consider adjusting your student’s team
- If your student will be riding the bus
- If your family has childcare needs.
*Note - please fill out this survey (English) survey (Spanish) for each of your students. Again - you will need to fill out the survey multiple times if you have multiple children.
Thank you! Go Rocks!

WWS Updates - July 17,2020
IMPORTANT! Please click here for an important video message from Dr. Sherry Grate.
Return of the Rocks - Message from Dr. Grate
As you know, the COVID-19 situation is evolving, which is making it extremely difficult to plan in these times of unprecedented uncertainty. Last week, we released our reopening plans and, based on the most recent information, we will be revising those plans to ensure the safest possible learning environment for our students and staff.
We have begun to explore alternative options for our return to school. We are looking at alternating days for all students, K through 12, so we can better ensure social distancing in classrooms, at recess, on buses and in the cafeteria. The situation is ever-changing, and specific details are not finalized and will continue to evolve. Principals and staff are working around the clock to create this alternative plan and we will be providing further details to families next week. Be assured - we will make decisions that are in the best interest of all our stakeholders, prioritizing health - physical and emotional - and safety - for staff and students - in our learning environment. It is important to note that we will still be providing a 100% virtual learning option for families that request it.
We understand you want answers. This is all uncharted territory, and we don't want to lock into a plan that proves to be outdated by the time we release it. We pledge to share information as soon as decisions are made. Remember - we are Shamrocks - and we will get through this together.
Virtual Learning - Survey Remains Open
Due to WWS weighing various return-to-school scenarios, the deadline for the Virtual Learning survey has been extended until details are shared with families. Many of you understandably have asked for more details before completing the survey and deciding to send your student in person, or sign him/her up for virtual learning. As a reminder, the survey links are below. Yes, you can change what you have submitted once details of the plan are released.

Early Learning Center
The Westfield Washington School Board of Trustees voted 5-0 on Tuesday evening to move forward with plans for a dedicated early learning space for its infant through pre-K student program. The district’s popular and successful early learning program currently occupies 21 classrooms over WWS’ six elementary buildings. A standalone facility, planned for land already owned by the district at Monon Trail Elementary (19400 Tomlinson Rd, Westfield, IN 46074) will free up these elementary classrooms to meet the needs of the schools’ K-4 population. Additionally, the new building will house the district’s administrative offices, which currently occupy leased space at 1143 E 181st St, Westfield, IN 46074. This cost, $120,000 annually, is money that can be returned to the classroom.
Help Wanted!
Did you know that Westfield Washington Schools offers child care for teachers and community members? In order to start the year out as the best program around, we need to hire additional staff. We are looking for people who love being with children, who have some flexibility in work hours, and who are interested in a competitive wage. If you are interested, please fill out an application at www.wws.k12.in.us>departments>
human resources>employment opportunities>WWS Job Postings>Support Staff>Childcare Services:Assistant>Any tots/all aboard position and contact Marci Derado at [email protected] Please note that all student spots for child care are already filled for the 2020-2021 school year. Office Hours for Spanish-Speaking Families
We are offering office hours at Central Office (1143 E. 181st Street) for Spanish-speaking families. These office hours will be held this summer every Monday from 7am - 9am and Wednesday from 3pm - 5pm. Spanish-speaking staff members will be on hand to help with registration, free and reduced lunch applications or answer and questions you may have. Please note - masks will be required.

WWS Reopening Plan
WWS Committees on Teaching & Learning, Operations, and Health & Safety continue to meet and plan for students to return August 13! Our aim is to share our plans with you by the middle of next week! Our commitment to you is to provide as normal an operating environment as possible, with various precautions in place to put safety first for our students and staff. We believe that providing in-person instruction is the most powerful method of teaching and learning and we look forward to bringing our students and staff back together again soon. As we share our plan with you next week, we will be asking important questions related to transportation service and teaching & learning. Thank you for all of the feedback you have provided through our parent survey and by reaching out with questions and input.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Update
I wanted to provide you with an update about our district equity work. In a recent email message, I outlined actions that we would be taking as a school district. We have met with Dr. Renae Azziz, Dr. Sandy Washburn, and Deanna Nibarger asking their feedback for our plans to provide staff with knowledge, skills, and resources to better perform in their roles. Our WWS cabinet leadership team is recommending that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion be added as a priority area to our district strategic plan. We want to emphasize the importance that all work within our priority areas is interconnected. I have appreciated the many conversations with staff, parents, and community leaders as we build partnerships and allies of support for our actions that have been shared. As we build DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) teams at each school, department, and at the district level, we will include our allies as vital partners in accomplishing our actions.

WWS Updates - June 19, 2020
Rocks Families,
Here are some updates for the week! Have a great weekend!
New Information

We do know that the 180-day requirement will remain in place and our intent is to begin school on schedule on Thursday, August 13. While we know that we have asked for your flexibility as we plan, our goal is to maintain our approved school calendar for 2020-21. We have committees evaluating health & safety, operations & transportation, and teaching & learning. Committees include staff members and in some cases, parents. We are collaborating with other Hamilton County districts on a weekly basis to share ideas and to plan for a successful return to normal operations with precautions. Our committees will continue to work hard on our plan and this coming week we will be able to share our framework for returning to school.
Kindergarten Assessments - Welcome Class of ‘33!
We are excited to share that we are moving forward with kindergarten assessments this summer. The plan is to hold assessments beginning mid-July. BAC Open for 2020-21 School Year
Westfield Washington Schools BAC program is designed to offer childcare before school, after school at each of our K-4 elementary schools and Zone 58 at Westfield Intermediate School for children in 5th grade through 13 years old. Before/After Care and Zone 58 are planning to be open on August 12th and continue through the school year as scheduled. The program will be following guidelines from the CDC, state, and local authorities as well as Westfield Washington Schools. Find more information here.
Registration for Summer Child Care closes today, Friday, June 19th. Remember that if we have less than twelve in a group, we won't be able to make a class. Currently there are enough children enrolled to have one class at each grade level from kindergarten through intermediate school but there are some families on a waiting list. At this point we do not have enough three- and four-year-old children registered to create a class for this level. Find more information here.

WWS Updates - June 12, 2020
Rocks Families,
Here are some updates for this week. Have a great weekend!
I would like to share that I am grateful for the many emails, conversations, and meetings that I have had since my message was shared with our families about equity. The concerns, the stories, and the insight has stirred a great deal of emotion for those who are sharing and for me as I listen and learn. It has been raw, and painful, and yes-necessary.
We acknowledge we have room to grow as a school district, and we are committed to the work it will take to ensure equitable treatment of all students. This work must be intentional, collaborative, and research-based. We need to continually examine our policies, practices, and procedures to ensure we are honoring the identities of all students regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.
We are in the process of designing a variety of activities to provide all district staff with opportunities to listen, learn, and engage in dialogue to address racism and discrimination. We are taking action steps this summer to provide implicit bias training for all staff, book studies (at the school and district levels), and partnering with our community to grow our common understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion. We are also working with Dr. Renae Azziz to create our road map for the 2020-21 school year. As we continue our equity journey, please continue to reach out with ideas! There are many possibilities ahead of us as we continue to ensure ALL students have access to safe and nurturing learning environments.
Summer Child Care - Open Enrollment - Now through June 19th

WWS Updates - June 5, 2020
Rocks Families,
I want to sincerely thank all the families who responded to my message on Tuesday. I appreciate reading and hearing the heartfelt stories and ideas about how best to move forward in a more equitable and inclusive way while approaching these conversations with an open mind. It is vital we hear all voices - parents, students, staff, and our community as a whole. While it is always extremely difficult to hear about racism, exclusivity and injustice, I am confident that we can learn, grow, and fight together to positively and productively stand up against injustice, racism and inequity.
Today we received a 38-page document of school reopening guidelines from the Indiana Department of Education. With this guidance now in hand, we can use this information to purposefully plan our return this fall. Our team is working to ensure our plans meet these guidelines, and our goal is to have a detailed return plan to announce in the coming weeks!
Stay flexible and stay tuned!
Summer Child Care Starts July 6

Song from SSES 3rd grader
Incoming Shamrock Springs 3rd grader Avery Trieu created song lyrics during quarantine about staying strong in hard times. She asked her aunt and uncle, who are professional musicians in NYC, to write music for it. The song, called Bravery, is now complete. Her aunt is the lead singer and Avery is featured at the end of the song, and the lyrics are 100% Avery's. Her other uncle, Cullen Webster, is a PE teacher at the Intermediate School and participated, as well. WTHR-13 covered the story earlier this week. You can watch the video for the song here -

Celebrating the Class of 2020
Congratulations to the Westfield High School Class of 2020! Wednesday night the school held a virtual graduation to honor our graduates. You can check that out here - https://www.wws.k12.in.us/whs
WHS still hopes to hold an in person celebration at a later time. Congrats Rocks!
Miss Alice
As you may have heard, our WWS family tragically lost bus driver, Alice Chamblin last week. Today, our WWS bus drivers honored Miss Alice by driving her elementary bus route together. We know that Miss Alice impacted many students district-wide as she drove routes to and from school, and she also drove for many of our WWS sports events in the evenings. Bus #73 will be parked at the Chatham Hills Clubhouse and remain there until noon on Friday, May 29th so that families and individuals who wish to leave notes, cards, or other tributes to Miss Alice may do so privately. Thank you for helping us honor Miss Alice.

WWS Updates - May 15, 2020
Weekly Update - Friday, May 15
What does next school year look like?
We know there is anxiety and uncertainty about what next school year looks like. Governor Holcomb has announced he will provide additional clarity about next school year on or around July 4th. Given that many factors will need to be taken into consideration, we are working to plan for different scenarios. We will be sharing a parent survey with you soon to gather feedback for returning to school and how we can improve upon future eLearning experiences. We will communicate updated details and plans for returning to school as decisions are made. Please stay tuned throughout the summer months.
What we do know is that WWS will be required to have 180 days of learning next year, and we cannot count on getting a waiver from that state requirement. It is important to know that we will need to consider all alternatives to ensure we deliver those 180 days of quality instruction, which could mean a possible change in the 2020-21 school calendar. Progress in our state and county over the coming weeks will impact our planning process. We encourage you to remain flexible and open minded. Know that our primary goal is to keep all students and staff safe. We will keep you posted as plans are finalized!
eLearning - done!
Thursday was our last day of eLearning. All assignments are due by noon on Monday, May 18.
Memorial Day Food Service
Looking ahead, on Thursday, May 21st, WWS will distribute 5 days of meals instead of 4 due to the Monday, May 25 Memorial Day holiday. We will NOT be distributing meals on Monday, May 25th, Memorial Day. On Tuesday, May 26, we will distribute 2 days worth of meals and then be back to our regular schedule on Thursday, May 28. PLEASE NOTE: WWS Food Service will continue through June 30th for any WWS students wishing to participate. Here is a link to the schedule.
Demographic Updates
Next week you will receive an email asking you to update your student’s demographic information for the 2020-21 school year. Please take a moment to provide us with updated information. Even if you have no changes, please review and submit to confirm. These steps will help us be prepared for the fall.
Vaccines
The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed well child visits including immunizations. As we start to reopen, the CDC has sent out recommendations to health care providers on how to safely provide well visits including immunizations. Contact your physician for options and directions on how they are meeting these needs. Here is a link with the 2020-21 school year Indiana State Department of Health school-required vaccines. Please bring this with you to your doctor visit for reference. As a reminder, updated immunization records are due to the school nurse by the first day of school. Please note, hepatitis A is a two-dose vaccine that has been added to grades 8, 9, 10 and 11 this year. If you chose to submit a religious objection or medical exemption, these expire May 22, 2020. Please send an updated form to the school nurse before the first day of school for the 2020-21 school year.

WWS Updates - May 8, 2020
Weekly Update - Friday, May 8
Summer Child Care
As we announced last week, opportunity camps (science, sports, art, etc) will not be open in June. Given the Governor's executive order for school facilities and grounds to remain closed through June 30th, our SSP team is currently working on developing a plan for possibly opening childcare in July for essential workers and for families needing childcare as an essential component as they return to work. The SSP team is currently working with State and local officials on required safety guidelines with a goal of possibly opening summer childcare the week of July 6th. CDC social distancing guidelines will be followed upon opening. We will share additional information as it becomes available.

A few reminders for next school year.
We know there is anxiety and uncertainty about what next school year looks like. Governor Holcomb has announced he will provide additional clarity about next school year on or around July 4th. While we don’t have answers at this point, we are working to plan for different scenarios. We will communicate those to you as decisions are made.

Big or small, count them all! #countallkids The online form only takes minutes to complete, and the census results will direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities. Take a few moments this week to complete your form.

WWS Updates - May 1, 2020
Hello Rocks! A few updates before your weekend starts!
All Public School Buildings Closed until June 30
Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. McCormick clarified this week that all school buildings and campuses will be closed until June 30th. If your student has something critical that was left at school that needs to be retrieved, please contact your student’s principal to arrange pick-up details. Otherwise, we will be sending out information on how to pick-up items left in lockers once the closing order has been lifted. If this date or information changes, we will let you know.
WWS Summer Camps 2020 Update
Because all WWS buildings are closed through June, we will be unable to host any WWS Opportunity Camps because they are deemed non-essential. These include learning, art, sports and similar camps. However, because it is deemed essential, we are exploring the option of opening a summer child care program under CDC social distancing guidelines for families needing to return to work and in need of child care. Our Student Support Programs team is currently working with State and local officials on guidelines and we hope to be able to communicate specifics in the upcoming weeks.
Student Athletes
Last week the IHSAA announced that all student physicals for the 19-20 school year will carry over to the 20-21 school year. Incoming 9th grade athlete physicals will be moved over and on file at the high school. There will still be forms needed to participate in WWS team sports; more details coming soon.
Here is specific information for each building:

WWS Updates - Apr 24, 2020
Weekly Update - April 24, 2020
Changes in Grading for the 2019-20 School Year
Not surprisingly, grading during this extended closure is very different from a traditional classroom setting. Due to that, and based on much internal discussion and feedback, as well as guidance from the Indiana Department of Education, WWS is adjusting student grading protocols. Additional detail will be provided before report cards are issued.
Grades K-2 - Teachers are currently focused on the most essential standards, and those are what teachers will be providing feedback on student’s third trimester report cards.
Grades 3-4 - For the third trimester, WWS is suspending the use of letter grades and will utilize the following: S+, S, S- =Satisfactory, N+, N, N- =Needs Improvement, U=Unsatisfactory
Grades K-4 Specials - For the third trimester, teachers will use Complete or Incomplete based on percentage of work completed instead of S, N, or U.
Grades 5-8 - Year-long courses
Letter grades will be used for the 4th quarter. As always, if your student is having challenges, please reach out to the classroom teacher.
Grades 5-8 Quarterly classes
For the fourth quarter, letter grades will not be used, and students will receive a Complete or Incomplete based on work completed.
Grades 9-12 & WMS Courses for High School Credit
The Indiana Department of Education requires students earn a grade in order to earn a high school credit toward graduation requirements. Therefore, students will still earn letter grades for each course. Third trimester grades will be 100% of the student grade in the course and will not have a final exam that has typically been 20% of the final trimester grade.

All staff are Westfield Washington School employees, and are fee-based programs governed through the Student Support Programs Governing Board. Enrollment instructions, rates, and other details can be found here.

If you need to access wifi, please visit the COVID-19 section of the district website, which includes a map of school building parking lots where you can park and get connected.

Due to the low number of tech problems, members of our technology team will no longer be onsite at food distribution - but they are only a phone call away! During the remainder of the school year, please call 317.867.8087, Monday - Friday, 9am - 8pm to support. There is no tech support during the summer.
Congrats to WHS!

No topic is off limits so please send your questions about WWS related topics to [email protected] and we will try to answer your questions!
Vaccines for 2020-21 School Year
In regards to the required vaccinations for the 2020-21 school year, the current healthcare response related to the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted healthy child visits and vaccines. We understand that this has and will cause delays in obtaining the school required vaccinations and medical exemptions for the 2020-21 school year. Please know that we will take this into consideration at the start of the school year. If you submit a religious objection for vaccines, please remember these expire May 22nd and you will need to submit a new form at the start of the school year. We will update you on any further guidance regarding vaccines from the Indiana State Department of Health at the start of the new school year. Until then, please follow the current guidelines for keeping your family safe and healthy.

Please continue to check for updates via our regular messages and/or also by checking our Frequently Asked Questions document on our website.
The WWS administrative team, principals and COVID-19 response team have been meeting (virtually) to discuss the learning plans for the remainder of the school year. As you know, we have a solid learning plan until May 1 and those plans remain unchanged. For the remainder of the school year, the schedule will continue with the same pattern, using Monday and Friday as waiver days (no student lessons/teacher planning day) and Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday as eLearning days. However, the final day of learning for students will now be Thursday, May 14 (instead of Friday, May 22). This schedule aligns with the state-mandated 160 days of learning, and provides additional time for teachers to finalize year-end activities.
Below is the learning plan for May 4 - May 22.
Learning Plan:
May 4 - 8
Monday, May 4 - Waiver day - no student lessons - teacher planning day
Tuesday, May 5 - eLearning day
Wednesday, May 6 - eLearning day
Thursday, May 7 - eLearning day
Friday, May 8 - Waiver day - no student lessons - teacher planning day
May 11 - 15
Monday, May 11 - Waiver day - no student lessons - teacher planning day
Tuesday, May 12 - eLearning day
Wednesday, May 13 - eLearning day
Thursday, May 14 - eLearning day (last day for students)
Friday, May 15 - Waiver day - no student lessons - teacher planning day
Here is a graphic with the complete learning plan through the remainder of the year.
You will be receiving communication from your school(s) with eLearning details for the upcoming weeks. As always, please reach out to your student’s teacher with any questions or concerns. If you need a device, broadband access, or technology support, please call 317.867.8087, Monday - Friday, 9am - 8pm.
One of the most frequently asked questions is - when can my student pick up items in his/her locker? We understand this concern. We are working on a plan to allow you/your student to get back in the building once the Governor’s stay-home order is lifted. School nurses will be in touch shortly with the families that have student medicine in the clinics.
Thank you for your continued flexibility, support and cooperation during this challenging time. WE ARE SHAMROCKS and we will get through this together!
Stay healthy and ROCK ON!!!

- All high school seniors on track to graduate before school buildings were closed on 3/19 will be provided with the flexibility they need to earn an Indiana diploma.
We know you have many questions. District leadership, which includes our principals and members of our COVID-19 response team, will be convening to plan for the extended school closure and develop our continuous learning plan. WWS Updates - Mar 12, 2020
Westfield Washington Schools has been working in conjunction with state, county and local officials, as well as other Hamilton County school districts, to plan diligently for a possible COVID-19 situation. WWS has made the decision for school to be in session tomorrow (Friday, March 13). Beginning Monday, March 16, WWS will be closed through spring break.
We will communicate with families by the end of day tomorrow with finalized plans and next steps moving forward. Thank you for your patience as this situation is constantly changing. All of our communication will be posted on our website at COVID-19 Updates. -
WWS Updates - Mar 10, 2020
Westfield Washington Schools has been working diligently to plan for the possibility of a positive Coronavirus COVID-19 situation. To be clear - we are aware of no students or staff testing positive. We will continue to plan for any possible scenario and be vigilant, as ensuring a healthy learning environment is critical.
Here are some important updates you need to be aware of:
- As the number of individuals in Indiana testing positive continues to increase, it is important to note that once this occurs, many decisions, including school closures, are decided by the county department of health, not the school district.
- Should a WWS student or staff member test positive for COVID-19, we will be forced to close ALL 9 schools for 14 days and institute eLearning for those 10 school days. If this occurs, families will receive communication from their schools on eLearning procedures. Please be patient because this is not a typical eLearning situation.
- Please remember, we are prohibited from sharing specific health information about students and staff. Doing so would be illegal. Please do not engage in speculation, online or in person, about neighbors or classmates.
- We have initiated enhanced disinfecting protocols of our classrooms and buildings with our custodial service provider, Sodexo. This includes, but is not limited to, enhanced disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces, including railings/bannisters, desks and light switches. WWS buses are also being disinfected more regularly. We are also encouraging staff to allow more time for students to hand wash, knowing that soap and water is the best form of disinfecting.
- If you are traveling to one of the countries with a CDC level 3 travel health notice, it is recommended that you self-quarantine for 14 days. Additional information, as well as a list of countries with health advisories, is available at cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html.
- Families planning international travel should keep in mind that this situation is rapidly evolving. International travel to areas where COVID-19 is spreading may result in delays or possibly quarantine if travel recommendations change while abroad. If you do travel internationally to a level 3 country, or believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, please notify the Hamilton County Health Department and your school’s office.
- We are not cancelling extracurricular events at this time, nor have we limited lunchtime visitors, but we will have additional hand sanitizer available, and we urge event attendees to follow CDC recommendations. Again, this situation is fluid. As always, if you are sick, please refrain from coming to school.
- If your student has a school-issued Chromebook please have them bring that device home every night in the event of an unexpected closure.
- If your child is in need of a device in order to complete eLearning assignments, complete one of the following forms. English Form - Spanish Form If you are unable to access this form, please call 317.867.8026.
- If you do not have access to broadband, please complete one of the following forms. English Form - Spanish Form. If you are unable to complete this form, please call 317.867.8026.
- This is a helpful resource on how to talk to your children about Coronavirus.
- Should we have to close for an extended period of time, we will communicate a plan to provide food for families in need.
This is an evolving situation and we are following this closely on an hour-by-hour basis.
Here is what you can do to help:
We would encourage families to begin conversations about what your family plan would be in the event of an extended school closure. If the Health Department requires us to close our schools, your family needs to have a plan in place to address an extended eLearning window. If buildings close, this would mean all programs and activities, including BAC, TOTS, All Aboard and developmental preschool, would close. Should the Hamilton County Health Department recommend we close, we will abide by their recommendations.
Thank you for your attention. We will keep you posted and any changes or updates.

WWS Updates - Mar 6, 2020
Dear Rocks Families,
With the recent announcement of a confirmed Coronavirus/COVID-19 case in Indiana, coupled with the approaching Spring Break (April 3-12), we recognize the growing concerns about the spread of the virus. While we know that there has been one confirmed case in Indiana, we must prepare for additional cases. There are no suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Westfield or in our schools and at this time and school-related activities will continue as scheduled. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and are in daily contact with the Hamilton County Health Department, Riverview Health and the Indiana Department of Education to ensure we have the latest information.
At WWS, we are taking extra precautions to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff. Even with these steps, WWS is not immune - as we have seen with the many absences the last few weeks for Influenza A and B.
We are asking you to help us limit the likelihood of an outbreak:
- If your student is sick, please keep them at home.
- If you are a WWS staff member and are sick, please stay home.
- Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, using soap and hot water.
- Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands or in the air.
- Help us remind students not to touch his/her eyes, mouth or nose.
As COVID-19 continues to spread internationally, families may have questions about upcoming travel. The CDC has issued no official recommendations regarding domestic travel at this time. All travelers should practice general preventive measures. Regarding international travel, the CDC recommends avoiding nonessential travel to countries with a CDC level 3 travel health notice. Additionally, anyone returning from travel to countries with a CDC level 3 travel health notice will be instructed by the Indiana Department of Health to self-quarantine for 14 days. Additional information, as well as a list of countries with health advisories, is available at cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/
travelers/index.html .Families planning international travel should keep in mind that this situation is rapidly evolving. International travel to areas where COVID-19 is spreading may result in delays or possibly quarantine if travel recommendations change while abroad. If you do travel internationally to a level 3 country, please notify your school’s office.
We will continue to communicate with you in the days and weeks to come. As always, the safety of our students, staff and families remains our top priority. We will act out of an abundance of caution to protect everyone’s health and wellbeing.
Thank you for your attention to this message. We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. See you Monday!

WWS Updates - Feb 28, 2020
Dear WWS Parents and Guardians,
The coronavirus (COVID-19) is creating a lot of attention globally. We wanted to send parents/guardians an update on what WWS is currently doing in our schools to prevent the spread of any illness.
WWS custodians and staff are following CDC recommendations for cleaning during the flu season in each of our buildings. They are concentrating on disinfecting areas that are used and/or touched frequently, such as light switches, drinking fountains and doorknobs. This will assist in the prevention of the spread/exposure to any types of illness.
We are encouraging frequent handwashing among students and staff, as it’s one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick. Riverview Health/school nurses are closely monitoring students who are showing any signs or symptoms of an infectious illness.
Listed below are some additional recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help prevent the spread of germs:
Stay home until “fever free” for at least 24 hours.
Seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms that cause concern.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, or by coughing into the inside of your elbow. Throw any used tissues away in trash.
Avoid touching eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in your home.
We will continue to consult with the Hamilton County Health Dept, Indiana State Dept of Health and Riverview Health Network to follow their recommendations on the spread of the coronavirus. In the event our schools would be closed for an extended period of time, we would utilize eLearning days for students per State recommendations.
To stay current with the most recent information from CDC related to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), please utilize the following link.
We appreciate your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Westfield Washington Schools
