The Shamrocks picked up two victories Thursday over Hamilton Heights and Western. The Rocks shot 153, led by Keith Ponsler

with 36. David Hildebrand fired a 37 and Timmy Hildebrand, Colton Smith each shooting 40.

The softball team lost to Fishers 7-5.  Leading the offense was Leslie London going 2-4 with 1 RBI and Kaycie White 1-3 with 2 RBI’s. Maddie Norman, Kelsey Beaudry and Savannah Young each had one hit.

The Freshman Baseball team notched another victory with a decisive win over the Pike Red Devils, 14-4.  Mitch Chapman started on the mound for the Rocks, followed by Nick Rhodes in relief.  Offensively, the Rocks were slow out of the gate, but ended the game in the 5th, by scoring 9 runs in the inning. Jackson Bard, Nick Rhodes, Hunter Edmonds, Mitch Chapman, and Evan Lewis all had two hits on the evening.  Jacob Eccles earned the game ending RBI with a bases-loaded walk.

Chris Ayers and Zach Smitherman joined forces to throw a no-hitter for the JV baseball team in an 11-0 victory in five innings over Lafayette Jeff on Thursday. Ayers and Smitherman tallied four strikeouts and walked one in completing the no-no. Five runs in the first three innings helped Westfield blow out Lafayette Jeff. An RBI triple by Cole McCrary and a groundout by Nolan Stitz during the first inning and an RBI triple by Matt Kinney and an RBI double by Nick Ferrer in the second inning supplied the early offense for Westfield. Kinney racked up three RBIs on three hits for Westfield. Westfield brought home one run in the third inning, and matched that run total in the fourth. In the third, Westfield scored on a sacrifice fly by Scott Murphy, plating Stitz.

The boys track team was finally back at full strength and had a very strong Sectional showing last evening. The highlight of the night was Dejuan Simmons winning the sectional and breaking a very old school record in the high jump at 6’7.25” as well as finishing a very strong 5th in the long jump. Paul Waite also qualified for the regional, backing his fine conference meet up with another 13’6” effort, finishing 3rd. Also qualifying for the regional is the 4x800 relay team of Caleb Grimes, Colin Rinne, Sam Sobczak and Eric Gonzalez who edged the better-seeded Zionsville team to claim the last spot. Stephen Curry finished 5th in the 300 hurdles, but shattered the school record in that event. Also scoring points in the very tough Carmel sectional: Mikey Roach, Frank Grimes, Austin Robinson, Devin Reece, Stephen Wallace, Cody Baker, Jacob Frank, and AJ Gilchrist.

Welcome

We are ready to "ROCK" the house in 2011-12!! Our student-athletes and coaches have worked extremely hard throughout the summer and it is time to watch them perform. It is our hope that everyone takes pride in being a ROCK! The Athletic Department theme for the 2011-12 is "Teamwork Makes the Team Work". We will be working hard to create a culture of team. The world is filled with messages of "ME", but we want to focus on the "WE" aspect of life. We strive to develop our programs in a way that will positively influence our community for years to come. We truly believe that all of you are part of the Westfield Team!!.

As with many schools, we continue to charge an "Athletic Fee" at Westfield High School. Please read some of the reasoning below. We appreciate your support and continue to work hard to get the most out of every dollar spent on kids. Beginning with the 2010 - 2011 school year, Westfield Washington Schools began collecting an “Athletic Fee” per sport, per season. This fee has been set by the Westfield Washington School Board at $35.00 for each sport that your child elects to participate in. We will continue to collect this fee and the amount will remain at $35.00 for each sport played. The money collected will go to Central Office to help offset transportation and coaching salaries. The fees will be collected by the athletic department prior to the first athletic contest of each season. Why did Westfield Washington Schools moving to an “Athletic Fee”? Westfield Washington Schools is working to be proactive in cutting budget costs with as little impact on the need to eliminate teams or coaching positions. Why are we asking students to pay for extra-curricular Athletic activities? With this “Athletic Fee”, some of the costs involved in running a top level athletic program can be lowered, which will help with reducing budget expenses. How will the Athletic fees be used? The Athletic fees will be used to offset transportation costs and coaching salaries. Will the program participation fees be higher next year? It is very possible the fees will be higher in 2012-13. The state continues to fall short of their revenue estimate, which means we are anticipating deeper cuts next year. Will all student-athletes be expected to pay the athletic fee? Yes, all students participating in extra-curricular athletic activities will be required to pay the fee. Participation in extra-curricular athletic activities is optional and is not a state requirement. Therefore, in order to continue to provide the same level and quality of programs, we will be forced to look for alternative revenue such as an athletic fee. Will I pay more than once if I am a multi-sport athlete? Yes, this fee is per sport, per season. When is this program “Athletic Fee” due? The fee is due and will be collected prior to the first contest of each season. Does the “Athletic Fee” mean your child will be given equal playing time? No, the athletic fee is being used to support the program and does not guarantee playing time.

We continue to work to improve all areas of our athletic department and listen to the feedback provided throughout the year to steadily improve. We would like to thank everyone for supporting Westfield High School and Westfield Athletics. We hope you enjoy watching our kids compete and we ask that everyone be considerate to everyone by showing great sportsmanship each night. Enjoy the games. Go ROCKS!!
